Facts about breast cancer:
- Breast cancer starts in breast tissue which consists of tissue from the armpit to the breast bone & extending up to the collar bone
- Cancerous breast tissue tends to present as a hard mass in the breast and is painless, although there are exceptions to this.
- Less than 10% of breast cancers are hereditary
- Breast cancer occurs almost exclusively in women with less than a 1% rate of occurrence in men. It is more common after the age of 50
- Breast cancer can take many forms-prognosis & treatment options vary depending on the type with ductal carcinoma being the most common
Signs and symptoms of possible breast cancer:
- Lump in the breast or underarm
- Changes in the breast size or shape
- Changes in the skin of the breast or nipple
- Discharge or bleeding from the breast or nipple
