| DIABETES AWARENESS CLINICS
Our Diabetes Awareness Clinics teach people how to recognize symptoms and determine if they, or someone they know, might be at risk. Clinics are delivered by our registered nurses in a relaxed, comfortable setting of your choosing.
Facts about diabetes:
- Diabetes is a condition of high blood glucose levels caused by defective insulin secretion from the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps to convert glucose into energy. Without sufficient insulin, high levels of glucose accumulate in the bloodstream.
- The effects of high blood sugar levels make it harder for the red blood cells to squeeze into small blood vessels of the body - this causes the walls of the blood vessels to lose their strength.
- When left untreated or improperly managed the high levels of blood sugar can damage the kidneys, eyes, nerves, heart and blood vessels in addition to a variety of health complications, including:
- High blood pressure, a main risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
- Lower limb infections that can lead to ulceration and amputation.
- It is estimated that approximately 5% of the adult population has diabetes, or 1.5 million Canadians.
