HEPATITIS A (HAV) IMMUNIZATION CLINICS

Our registered nurses are available to visit your business and provide Hepatitis A vaccinations to your staff.

Facts about Hepatitis A:

  • HAV is a highly contagious viral infection of the liver that can lead to liver disease.
  • HAV is spread through fecal-oral route, i.e. by putting something in the mouth that was contaminated by the stool of a person with the disease or through contaminated food or water. Can also be spread via blood transfusions and shared needles with an infected person. Sexual transmission has also been reported.
  • Once you have had the virus, you will develop a lifelong immunity to it.

Symptoms of Hepatitis A:

  • Weakness, headache and fever.
  • May include stomach cramps, diarrhea and jaundice.
  • Symptoms can last for several weeks and hospitalization may be required.

Facts about Hepatitis A vaccination:

  • 95% of adults and 100% of children vaccinated will be protected from HAV.
  • The vaccination is safe and effective. Most people have little or no reaction. Canadians are more susceptible to HAV because they do not have a natural defense against the virus.
  • The number of outbreaks in Canada is steadily increasing.

Who should consider Hepatitis A vaccination?

  • Children and empoyees in day care centres as well as the child's parents and other contacts.
  • Institutional workers.
  • International travelers to areas where HAV infection rates are high.
  • High-risk behavior in sexually active adults with multiple partners, homosexual active males and users of illicit injectable drugs.
  • Hemophiliacs and other recipients of therapeutic blood products.
  • Military personnel, health care workers, sewage workers and food handlers.
  • Handlers of primate animals, eg. veterinarians and zoo keepers
  • Frequently affected communities
  • Consumers of high risk food, eg. raw shellfish

Protect yourself from infection:

  • Vaccination is the single, most effective means of preventing HAV.
  • Benefits are HIGH. A three-shot series given over a 6 month period will protect you - AND contribute to the elimination of this silent, highly infectious virus.
