Facts about Hepatitis A (HAV):
- HAV is a highly contagious viral infection of the liver that can lead to liver disease.
- HAV is spread through fecal-oral route (putting something in the mouth that was contaminated by the stool of a person with the disease or through contaminated food or water). HAV can also be spread via blood transfusions and by sharing needles with an infected person. Sexual transmission has also been reported.
- Symptoms are weakness, headache and fever and may include stomach cramps, diarrhea and jaundice. Symptoms can last for several weeks and hospitalization may be required.
- Once you have had the virus, you develop a lifelong immunity to it.
Facts about Hepatitis B (HBV):
- HBV is a highly contagious virus that infects the liver. It is spread through contact with body fluids or contracted through bites, puncture wounds or cuts in the skin.
- 50% of HBV infected individuals will develop inflammation of the liver, which can be debilitating for up to 6 months.
- 10% of infected adults become permanent carriers of the virus and may develop cirrhosis and liver cancer. HBV can be fatal and there is no effective cure or treatment.
Combined Hepatitis A and B Vaccine:
- It is a combined vaccine that immunizes against both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
- It is for those who require immunization for both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
- It is effective for those who complete the series of three injections.
Who should consider Combined Hepatitis A and B vaccination?
- Travelers (including armed forces personnel) to areas where the germs are common.
