Facts about Hepatitis B:
- Hepatitis B (HBV) is a highly contagious virus that infects the liver. It is spread through contact with body fluids or contracted through bites, puncture wounds or cuts in the skin.
- 50% of HBV infected individuals will develop inflammation of the liver which can be debilitating for up to 6 months.
- 10% of infected adults become permanent carriers of the virus and may develop cirrhosis and liver cancer. HBV can be fatal and there is no effective cure or treatment.
Facts about Hepatitis B vaccination:
- Over 90% of people vaccinated develop an immunity to Hepatitis B and are protected from the virus.
- The vaccination does not contain live viruses or blood products.
- WCB, OHS Guidelines recommends Hepatitis B vaccination be made available, upon request, to any worker who has or may have occupational exposure.
- Most people have little or no reaction to the vaccine.
Who should get Hepatitis B vaccine?
- Any worker with the potential for exposure to human blood or body fluids e.g. Healthcare facility, athletes, coaches, teachers, public safety, fire and rescue, law enforcement or working in an institution for the developmentally disabled.
- Adolescents who have not been immunized against Hepatitis B.
- International travelers to areas where HBV infection rates are high.
- High-risk behavior such as sexually active adults with multiple partners, people who share needles for injecting drugs or who practice tattooing or body piercing.
- Hemodialysis patients, hemophiliacs and others receiving repeated infusions of blood or blood products.

- Vaccination is the single, most effective means of preventing HBV.
- Benefits are HIGH. A three-shot series given over a 6 month period will protect you - AND contribute to the elimination of this silent, highly infectious virus.
