Facts about Tetanus:
- An acute and often fatal disease. Tetanus bacteria spores remain viable for years and are found in soil and animal feces. If you have a cut that is infected with the tetanus bacteria, you may contract tetanus.
- The most frequent symptom is jaw stiffness. Other symptoms are difficulty swallowing, restlessness, irritability, stiff neck, arms or legs, headache, fever, sore throat, chills, tonic spasms.
- Immunization is highly effective, provides long-lasting protection and is recommended for the whole population.
Fact: In Canada, 2-7 cases of tetanus are reported annually. Tetanus has a worldwide mortality rate of 50%. No deaths recorded in Canada since 1991.
Facts about Diphtheria:
- A serious communicable disease of the nose and throat. 20% of Canadians do not have protective levels of antibody to diphtheria.
- Symptoms are mild sore throat, dysphagia, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, and headache. The disease may cause problems breathing and in some cases, it can cause heart failure and paralysis.
Fact: In Canada, diphtheria incidence remains at low levels. Diphtheria has a mortality rate of 5-10%. No deaths recorded in Canada since 1983.
Facts about Tetanus/Diphtheria vaccination:
- Provides basic protection against these diseases.
- Most persons receive tetanus/diphtheria immunization (Td) in childhood.
- To maintain that protection, a booster for Td is recommended every ten years. Boosters that are more frequent may lead to severe local and systemic reaction, so it is very important to keep a record of Td immunization.
