She first learned of the program after undergoing heart surgery; the hospital referred her to MOW to assist during her convalescence. After her recovery, Mary found that preparing meals for herself was becoming a challenge. The winter months were particularly difficult as she did not always feel safe carrying groceries home with her walker.

Knowing that MOW is there to assist helps Mary remain independent. She lives in the same house in which she was born and has no plans to leave. “I’m a veteran – I know how to take care of myself”, she says. She joined the Armed Forces in 1940, serving in Canada, England, Holland and Germany during the Second World War.

Mary is not alone. There are currently 820,000 seniors in BC representing 17% of the province’s population, many of whom choose to live independently in their own homes. By 2031, it has been estimated that BC will have 1.35 million seniors, representing 24% of the population. While our program is already essential for current clients, the demand for MOW is growing.

Wilma

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/wilma

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/wilma#comments

Uncategorized

In August of this year, I turned 94 and I am so grateful for the wonderful experiences I’ve had in my 94 years. First, helping guide new recruits through the process of joining the Air Force, and later helping keep track of all planes flying in and around the British Columbia Coastal region.

In Prince Rupert, I lived and worked in the side of the mountain, where I helped track the movement of planes by placing pins and markers on a huge map of the region. When I looked out across the valley, I could see the American Army Base. We were always happy to be invited to get away and enjoy the American Army’s much better equipped kitchens. In those days, all our food came in the form of powdered eggs and milk and we were happy for something different!

After the war, I moved to Vancouver and met my wonderful husband, also an Air Force Veteran. We lived happily together and I was able to volunteer my time with Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, Cadets and even Meals on Wheels. For years, I would visit the same clients and got to know their stories while my daughter and I drove around in her tiny Volkswagen Rabbit delivering hot Meals on Wheels.

In recent years, my eyesight has worsened and I’ve been unable to read or shop for myself, but I haven’t let that stop me. I borrow books on tape from the library to listen to historical novels and mysteries and now I receive hot lunches delivered by friendly volunteers.

I’ve come to know each volunteer with their unique personalities. While every volunteer is kind and thoughtful, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know my Wednesday volunteer very well. Noted as the “most knowledgeable local person on local marine history,” he was awarded the Vancouver Historical Society’s Award of Merit in 1992 for the conservation of maritime history. This award is annually given to one or more persons who have made significant contributions to the understanding and appreciation of Vancouver history.

Leonard is now 86 years of age and much less mobile than he was during his days at the museum. Living alone in the same apartment for over 30 years, surrounded by memories of his earlier days in China, he relies on friends, neighbours and care aides to stop by to assist with his daily needs. Leonard looks forward to Meals on Wheels because it allows him to “see different people every day and they often stay and chat awhile.” Dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteers check up on Leonard each weekday to ensure that he receives healthy and nutritious meals. We are proud to give back to local champions like Leonard, who have helped our city grow and be remembered.

Mr. Au-Yeung

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/mr-au-yeung

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/mr-au-yeung#comments

Client Stories

Mr. Au-Yeung was born in Guangdong, China 88 years ago, and at 16 years of age he moved to Hong Kong because of the war. Mr. Au-Yeung finds it a hassle to cook Chinese meals at home, therefore he occasionally journeys out to find Congee (rice porridge). His family, who live as far away as Hong Kong and Australia, worry about him slipping or falling in our wet weather. To his families’ relief he now receives hot, traditional style Chinese Meals on Wheels, delivered by a Chinese speaking volunteer directly to his door each weekday. Our Chinese Meals on Wheels service depends on the dedication of our volunteers who take time out of their day to brighten the lives of clients who may not otherwise have contact with those who speak their language.

Joan

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/joan

https://www.carebc.ca/client-stories-archive/joan#comments

Client Stories

For 15 years, until suffering a heart attack at age 90, Joan delivered nutritious meals to seniors in her community who were often younger than herself.
