Annemarie, a retired nurse looking to continue making a difference, found her way CareBC.. "Meals on Wheels is a great way to volunteer because you make a direct difference in people's lives" - Annemarie, Meals on Wheels Driver After a fulfilling 40-year career as a registered nurse, Annemarie was ready to retire but knew she wanted to continue making a difference. She began seeking a volunteer opportunity that would allow her to be outdoors, interact with people, and create real change. A neighbor shared her own experience volunteering with Care BC’s Meals on Wheels (MOW), and Annemarie immediately knew it would be the perfect fit.
It didn’t take long for Annemarie to see how profound her impact could be with MOW. She learned that her role was much more than simply delivering meals: it was about bringing a sense of connection and community to people who often feel isolated and alone. A simple “How are you?” or a cheery comment like, “The sunshine is finally back!” can make all the difference. With each delivery, Annemarie sees how a few minutes of conversation and care can brighten her clients' lives. As a nurse, Annemarie was well aware of the impact she had on her patients' lives, though her interactions were often limited to brief hospital stays. Volunteering with MOW, however, has allowed her to connect with her clients beyond a single snapshot of their lives. By routinely visiting them in their homes, she offers invaluable support and companionship that truly makes a difference. Care BC and our clients are deeply grateful for the incredible dedication of volunteers like Annemarie. The time, care, and compassion our volunteers provide, along with a hot meal and wellness check, help seniors stay healthy, avoid hospital visits, and combat social isolation. Together, we’re helping to create a stronger, more connected community where seniors can live independently and with dignity. Comments are closed.
