For Peter and David, their weekly route is more than just delivering a meal, it is a routine built on friendship, connection, and community. Peter and David, long-time friends, have been volunteering as delivery drivers with Meals on Wheels for over eight years. Once a week, they make the trip into the Grandview area for their delivery route, something that has become a meaningful and consistent part of their routines.
After retiring as a general practitioner, Peter was looking to add structure to his weekly routine and find a way to give back to his community. At the same time, David wanted to volunteer in a way that supported his community without impacting paid job opportunities. Meals on Wheels turned out to be the perfect fit for both of them, lucky for us! Over the years, Peter and David have found many reasons to value their time with us. Their weekly routes have given them an opportunity to get to know the city better, and they look forward to seeing familiar faces and sharing the small conversations that come with each delivery. They especially appreciate the warm feeling of knowing they are brightening someone’s day. Although David met many interesting people as an Air Canada agent, he especially values the deeper, more personal connections he builds with clients through his weekly delivery routes. They both understand that many of the seniors they visit experience social isolation and loneliness. A few minutes at the door, checking in and sharing a friendly conversation can make a meaningful difference, and Peter and David don’t take that lightly. They know that what may seem like a small gesture can have a lasting impact on someone’s day. Volunteering together has also been a meaningful part of their experience. After completing their route, they always enjoy a meal together, a small tradition that has become something they both genuinely look forward to. Not only do they enjoy each other’s company, but it also makes logistics like parking and arranging vacation coverage much easier. Their commitment to giving back has even extended to the next generation. Peter and David have brought their grandsons along to volunteer, sharing firsthand how rewarding it can be to support their community. For them, it is not just about delivering meals, it is about building connections, strengthening community, and passing those values on. Comments are closed.
