Meet Maggie! She has devoted over 20 years to CareBC as a Meals on Wheels Driver and has recently received our lifetime membership award! Maggie has been involved in Care BC’s Meals on Wheels program for 22 years. When she first joined, she was simply looking for something to help relieve the stress of her demanding job. But once she found this volunteer opportunity, she never looked back. In fact, she even reduced her regular work hours so she could dedicate more time and energy to serving others.
Originally from Hong Kong, Maggie came to Canada as a teenager to study. She grew up, worked, and built her life in Canada and she has always believed in the importance of volunteerism. Over the years, she has volunteered with various organizations, including the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, SPCA, BC Children’s Hospital, and Food Runners. But her involvement in those roles was always for a limited time. Meals on Wheels is the only volunteer role she has never stepped away from. She says, “This essential community service is something I simply cannot stop doing. I want to keep volunteering for as long as my body allows.” Over the past 22 years, Maggie has formed deep bonds with many of the seniors to whom she delivers meals. Each delivery is more than just a meal – it’s a moment of connection. They exchange warm greetings and show care for one another. Maggie admits that witnessing the loneliness, aging, and even the passing of clients over the years can be emotionally heavy. But each time she sees the joy and gratitude on their faces when they receive their meals and feels the satisfaction of knowing they feel cared for, it reaffirms her decision to continue this meaningful work.
