Fifty years of selfless dedication is one of the most precious gifts to the community! Chris Croner is the longest serving Meals on Wheels volunteer at Care BC. We salute this Super Volunteer who has served the community for 55 years! Chris began his journey with the Meals on Wheels program in the basement of First United Church on Hastings. Back then, the route leader used a small red card to record each client’s information. After each delivery, Chris would write notes on the red card to follow up on the client’s condition. At the end of the day, the route leader would review all the red cards and make notes if there were any special concerns. Chris says “This work is all about people. Meals on Wheels is a personal commitment for me – it’s never been about recognition”. His 55-year commitment is truly inspiring. At the same time, he’s also been encouraged by fellow volunteers. One of them, Peter, used to receive Meals on Wheels while he was recovering from an illness. Once he got better, he immediately signed up to volunteer. Seeing how much the program has helped people in need – like Peter- continues to motivate Chris. Chris leads a busy life. He owns an organic blueberry farm where he grows blueberries and makes jam. Sometimes, he even needs to deliver products to stores in Whistler. But despite his busy schedule, Chris has continued to volunteer weekly for the East side meal delivery route. This year make Chris’s incredible 55-year milestone with the Meals on Wheels program. When asked how he feels about it, he smiles and simply says, “Nothing special – Meals on Wheels has just become a part of my life. I’ll keep doing it until I can’t walk anymore”. Comments are closed.
