NORTH SHORE FAMILY RESPITE CENTRE
The Because You CARE Capital Campaign
On September 18 2024, Care BC launched its Because You CARE campaign at the Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver, gathering over 100 dedicated supporters committed to improving the lives of caregivers and their loved ones in our community. The Because You CARE capital campaign aims to build a Family Respite Centre (FRC) on the North Shore to meet the growing need for this crucial service amid an aging population.
The FRC will provide temporary Adult Day Care and Overnight Respite Care for seniors diagnosed with dementia, who are living at home, thereby enabling their caregivers to get the periods of “respite” or the rest they require to continue to care for their loved ones at home. Too frequently, the alternative is a visit to the emergency, followed by admission into an acute care hospital bed, and placement in a long-term care bed. Vancouver Coastal Health has agreed to fund the annual operating costs of the FRC.
The FRC will be owned and operated for 60 years by Care BC and located on the ground level of a 6-storey tower in a custom-designed, homelike setting which will include 18 private bedrooms with ensuite, and 25 Adult Day Care Program spaces. Eighty-nine affordable housing units, which will be owned and operated by Catalyst, will be constructed above the FRC.
Completion of the site is anticipated in the fall of 2025. Care BC has raised approximately 90% of the funding needed to develop and complete the Centre and is on track to reach our fundraising goal by next Fall. However, we still need financial support to get us over the finish line.

The Crucial Role of Respite Care
On September 9 2024, Global BC’s Global News Morning Co-Anchor Jason Pires spoke with Dr. Inge Schamborzki about the crucial role of respite care.
Watch the interview below to see how respite care offers essential support for caregivers through providing necessary breaks while ensuring that their loved ones (primarily seniors diagnosed with dementia or physical limitations) receive expert and compassionate care.
